From the first day the Fairfax Scoop opened its doors in 2001, their all-organic, small-batch handmade ice cream could be called the best in the US, and in my opinion it has held that title ever since. In less than a year, most of Marin County had heard and flocks of devotees still wait in line night after night. How the Scoop has eluded an international reputation I don’t know (probably because they refuse to expand beyond their alley-wide three-table store space). Though they constantly experiment and add new flavors—often based around what ingredients are in season at locals farms—signatures like vanilla honey lavender have earned permanent status. In between taking orders, you’ll notice your server pressing and rolling fresh waffle cups and cones, which are a must if you can eat them. I’ve traveled far and wide, but never found anything as good as the scoops at the Scoop. Menu changes frequently.
RECS: Anything and everything. It’s all divine. The vanilla honey lavender, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and some variation of coffee are always on the menu, but everything else changes day to day. Try a few flavors before you decide. (NOTE: the menu always features a soy/non-dairy selection and a sorbet, so vegans can get in on the action too)
