Biwa (Portland, OR)

Biwa is another restaurant that just feels right. It’s high quality izakaya-style Japanese (no sushi here) served at affordable prices in a basement space of perfect, simple décor. Sit at the bar and you’ve got a good view of the yakitori cooks turning out small skewers of meat, seafood and veggies with understated precision. You can also get a variety of appetizers, soups, noodles and a few set meals. If you’re on a budget, happy hour at the bar seating is the way to go.

RECS: Anything and everything. Start slow with some chicken breast, tsukune meatball and pork belly skewers and a yakionigiri rice ball or two. Then order more (much more!) from there.
