My very first taste of the Austin phenomenon known as breakfast tacos (when is the rest of the US going to catch on?!) transpired at this unassuming breakfast-lunch restaurant only a few years ago, and I’ve been a devoted fan ever since. Mi Madre’s keeps a loyal customer base thanks to their unique take on traditional Mexican, serving one of the more limited yet wide-ranging menus you’ll find, including everything from mole enchiladas to burritos and churros, quesadillas and chalupas. I recommend starting with a few breakfast tacos and saving the bigger items for a return visit, but be sure to come early or you might get stuck staring at a Closed sign after 2pm.
RECS: The pork adobado taco could be called a house specialty, different than anything you’ll find elsewhere. I usually start with one adobado, add a vegetarian migas taco, then throw in an extra beans-and-eggs taco if I need a little more. Try any of these or whatever else looks good.
