Who would have thought some of the best sushi in Austin could be found at a tiny out-of-the-way food cart in a Shell station parking lot? Not I, and not most of the people I know, who have expressed extreme skepticism about the whole idea. But these naysayers must not have tasted Sushi-A-Go-Go’s sunshine roll, bbq eel roll, or any of their other fresh fish and vegetarian offerings. The price may scare off all the two-dollar taco eaters, but one maki roll here will fill most hungry stomachs (I ordered two and had to save some for later). It may not have much to offer in the way of atmosphere—their new location just has a few picnic tables—but you won’t much care after you taste this little Japanese wonder. NOTE: Everything is made fresh, which means if you get there at the wrong time—say, right on the heels of three or more people—you could end up waiting 15 minutes or more. ALSO: I’m curious to try one of their special-order “sushi cakes” meant to feed seven people or more. Whoa!
RECS: It’s all about the maki rolls here. The sunshine roll (salmon, mango, avocado) is a standout, but as with any sushi spot, the best thing you can do is ask the chef what they recommend that day.
