For years Toy Joy has delighted Austin with its mayhem of odd objects and playthings, but the real draw for those in the know is their vegan soft serve ice cream—probably my favorite low-key desert in Austin. Unlike the local favorite Amy’s Ice Cream, Toy Joy’s variety isn’t overly sweet, and you won’t have a hard time choosing what to get. The café always serves just two flavors: standard vanilla and a different featured flavor every week or so, though the best way to go is usually a swirl of the two. When deciding what size to get, beware of your eyes being bigger than your stomach; I find their littlest cup is often just the right amount. INSIDER’S TIP: Acquire an Austin Go Local card (if you don’t already have one, which you should) and you get a free small soft serve with every store purchase!!!
