Isobune Sushi (San Francisco, CA)

The generally abysmal quality of most stateside conveyor-belt sushi restaurants has led American eaters to consider them somewhat déclassé. In Japan, however, they perfectly unite fast-paced society and quality raw fish. Isobune comes as close as San Francisco can get to such an establishment, with decent sushi offerings swirling around this small restaurant in the Japantown Mall. Grab whichever plates look good, but know that you can always ask the chef to prepare something fresh. NOTE: If you’re at the mall during dinner hours, I recommend going for the more upscale fare at Takara or Ino Sushi instead.

RECS: It’s all relatively comparable, though at a slightly higher price, the toro (premium fatty tuna) sushi is a standout.
